William Shaffer Key was warden at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary from 1924 to 1927 and again in 1935.  He was president of the Wardens Association of the United States in 1926 and served as chairman of the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board from 1928 to 1932. It was as a military and civic leader that Key was most well known.  Major General Key was commander of the 45th Division in 1940 and commanding general of several other military activities during his career. General Key's civic activities were numerous. Major General Key died in 1959 and was buried with military honors in Oklahoma City.
