REWARDS

REWARDS is Reentry Education through Work, Attitude, Respect, Dedication, and Study. The program's
dual focus is to assist offenders prepare for reentry into society, as well as to help those who will be
incarcerated long-term.

REWARDS is a six (6) month program consisting of seven (7) subjects of instruction: Thinking for a Change,
Journaling, Anger Management, Family & Parenting, Employment & Personal Finance, Health & Wellness,
and Social Skills.

Thinking for a Change is a cognitive behavior self change program. In this class offenders learn that their
thinking controls their behavior, as well as new ways of thinking to help them avoid criminal and/or hurtful
behavior.

Journaling is a form of self discovery where the offenders learn they are capable of and deserving of
positive change in their lives, and that they alone can make this positive change within them. Journaling
will assist offenders in recognizing how they are responsible for this positive change.

Anger Management classes teach offenders that anger itself is not wrong, but is a normal human emotion.
Offenders learn that their inappropriate responses to anger is what needs to be avoided.

Family & Parenting classes are aimed at assisting offenders to create, reinforce, and/or maintain relationships
with their family while they are incarcerated, as well as maintaining a positive family structure once they are
released from prison.

Employment & Personal Finance is designed to assist offenders in seeking and maintaining employment once
released. Offenders are also exposed to instruction aimed at teaching money management skills.

Health & Wellness classes teach offenders how to remain healthy while in prison; as well as once they are
released. They are taught the value of exercise, food labels, and over all good nutrition. Instruction is also
given on avoiding various types of infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS. A portion of this section is
educated to the health risks involved with the use of tobacco.

Social Skills classes are designed to help build skills needed in social situations. These skills include listening,
asking questions, and giving feedback. A segment of this section is dedicated to character building and the
need for change.

Several rewards can be earned within the program. Each week a Student of the Week is awarded with a
certificate and each month a Student of the Month is awarded with a certificate. This helps to teach
offenders that their positive actions have positive consequences. Also, offenders learn to recognize and
develop their strengths thru this positive reinforcement.
