  LAWTON CORRECTIONAL FACILITY PROGRAMS

Education

Adult Education
Students entering all education programs are tested using the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education). A Student education plan will be developed for each student in Adult Education, based on his TABE scores and other assessed needs.  Program assignments are made for each student based on his Student Education Plan.  Students are expected to attend class daily, and three unexcused absences within thirty days may result in an administrative drop of the student. All academic classes are open entry and open exit.

Basic Literacy
Objective— Provide academic skills in reading, writing and mathematics at the elementary school level.
Student requirements—Students will be placed in Basic Literacy who have a TABE score of 0-5.9.
Attendance—Students are expected to attend class daily and may be dropped after three unexcused absences during a thirty day period. Students must complete a minimum of 120 hours before testing for promotion to the next level.

ABE (Adult Basic Education)
Objective - Provide academic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics at the middle school level.
Student requirements - Students will be placed in the ABE class with a TABE test score of 6.0-8.9.
Attendance - Students are expected to attend class daily. Students must complete a minimum of 120 hours before testing for promotion to the next level.

High School Equivalency (GED)
Objective – Provide the necessary academic skills to successfully complete the GED test.
Curriculum:  The academic areas taught and tested are writing skills; language arts and grammar; science; social studies; and mathematics.
Student Requirements - Students must be able to perform at the 10.5-12.9 levels on the TABE test. Students must also successfully complete the practice GED test prior to taking the actual GED test.
Attendance - Students are expected to attend class daily. The classes are open entry and open exit.
Overview - The students in all academic classes are instructed using methods most conducive to their academic success.

Cognitive-Behavioral Classes

Life Skills
Objective – To assist inmates with re-integration into society upon release.  The content areas offered include:
Transitional living skills, making right choices, financial management, job interviews, family life, and interpersonal communications.
Student requirements - All offenders will have an opportunity to attend and participate in Life Skills.
Attendance - Students are expected to attend class daily.

Thinking for a Change
Objective:  Reduce criminal thinking and behaving and promote pro-social thinking and behavior.
Curriculum:  Twenty-two units on reducing criminal ways of thinking and behaving and practicing positive behavior.
Student Requirements:  All offenders will have the opportunity to attend and participate in Thinking for a Change.
Attendance:  Students are expected to attend class daily.    

CRAFT
Objective: An advanced course for changing criminal thinking and behavior.
Curriculum: There are six sections: Thinking for a Change, Anger management, Communication, Journaling and Logotherapy, Family Relations, and Health and Wellness.
Student requirements: Assessment of criminogenic needs. Students must have sufficient number of days remaining to complete the course, approximately six months.

Vocational Programs

Culinary Arts
Objective:  To prepare students for volume food service preparation and handling upon release.
Curriculum:  Students have 240 hours in food service theory and 240 hands-on hours of food service preparation for a total of 460 hours.
Student requirements:  Students must have a TABE score of 6.0 or higher and at least 1000 days remaining on their sentence.
Attendance: Students are expected to attend class daily.  Three unexcused absences within thirty days may result in an administrative drop from the class.

Cabinetry/Woodworking
Objective:  To prepare students to be cabinetmakers and finish carpenters upon release.
Curriculum:  Students have 240 theory hours and 720 hours of hands-on cabinet making for a
Student requirements: Students must have a TABE score of 6.0 or higher and at least 1000 days remaining. Students must be a Level 3 or 4. The course length is 960 hours with controlled entry and exit.
Attendance: Students are expected to attend class daily.

Business and Basic Computers
Objective:  To teach students Microsoft Office 2007:  Word, Excel, Access and Power Point.
Curriculum:  Windows XP. Each student is assigned to an individual computer. The minimum course length is 460 hours.
Student Requirements:  Students must have a TABE of 6.0 or higher and at least 1000 days remaining on their current sentences.
Attendance:  Students are expected to be in class daily and may be dropped after three unexcused absences during a thirty day period.

College Courses

Cameron University:  Cameron University offers courses at Lawton Correctional Facility that lead to an Associate Degree. Students who are under 26 years of age may receive a DOC grant to pay for their tuition and books.
Correspondence Courses:  These courses may be taken by inmates through the University of Oklahoma. They are self-paced and self-pay.

Other Programs and Services Available Through the Programs Department

Chaplains:  serve as the Religious Services and Volunteer Coordinators.
Leisure Libraries:  available for all offenders.
Inter-Library Loan Program:  available for all offenders.
Recreational Activities and Team Sports:  available for all Houses.
Laubach Tutoring Program:  available for general population offenders who need special tutoring in Literacy.
ESL Services:  non-English speaking Hispanic students can learn academics with a Spanish-speaking instructor.
