The Medical Services unit provides direct medical care to over twenty thousand incarcerated offenders and oversees the medical care of DOC offenders housed in private prisons. There are four infirmaries to provide special medical care for offenders and the agency has a service contract with the Lindsay Memorial Hospital for more acute care that cannot be provided on-site. Offenders are able to access specialty care through the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, as well as local hospitals and medical providers as the need arises.
Mental Health services are provided by a staff of professional psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychological clinicians. The Mental Health Unit operates three specialty housing units for the seriously mentally ill. These units are located at Joseph Harp Correctional Center, the Mable Bassett Correctional Center and the Oklahoma State Prison. The agency partners with the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services to coordinate reentry services for the seriously mentally ill offenders. This partnership has yielded excellent results in successfully reintegrating this population back into the community. The staff of the Mental Health Unit have developed and implemented many innovative programs to provide support and recovery assistance to the seriously mentally ill.
The Programs Unit is responsible for providing educational programming throughout the agency. All offenders are tested to determine literacy levels and the educational program placement needed to ensure access to the most appropriate literacy services. Each year, offenders in the Department of Corrections earn the high school diplomas and many are able to access college courses leading to associates or bachelor’s degrees. The program unit is also responsible for the oversight of treatment intervention programs, to include drug and alcohol treatment and cognitive restructuring programs. Participation data is collected and analyzed to ensure effectiveness of programs. All treatment contracts for intervention services are managed by the programs unit and routine review of facility based programs are conducted to ensure compliance with best practices models.
The Victim Services Unit assists victims of crime by providing information related to the custody and status of offenders who are incarcerated or under the supervision of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. It is the mission of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections’ Victims Services Unit to serve as the initial point of contact to assist victims and survivors of crime by providing information and resources in response to inquiries related to offenders; ensuring the opportunity for victim notification; providing the opportunity for victim/offender dialogue, offering educational workshops and panels relating to the concerns of victims and their families, and opportunities for restorative justice that focuses on the needs of the victim, the responsibility of the offender and the role of the community in seeking the greatest level of restoration and healing possible.
